This pattern derives its name from the Battle of Saratoga where British General John Burgoyne was surrounded and captured in October, 1777. It is a quilt of upstate New York with most antique examples of the pattern having been made in the Hudson Valley or Adirondack areas. The Saratoga Battle Field Park is now between Saratoga and the Hudson River. The pattern itself hearkens back to a common woven overshot coverlet design popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Burgoyne Surrounded is usually made in red, white, and blue – but don’t be afraid to try different fabrics. It would look great in “folk art” colors or brights. You might also try using batiks or reproduction fabrics.
